By the Publick papers I perceive that the United States have taken umbrage at the interruption
of their commerce with France altho’ Sweden, Denmark, and the Italian States are obliged by
the Combined Powers to submit to this measure.
The United States no doubt tremble for the Republic of France; and their passions and
interest stimulate them to support Her. But I must humbly apprehend that prudence will
not suffer them to enter the Lists as it we[re?] against Europe united. If indeed they were
a Century or even fifty years riper in power I would not hesitate to pronounce their taking
immediate part with France...
